A new solo exhibition by artist Hui Sun titled “Vertigo” will open at the Malta Society of Arts on 28th May, bringing together more than 20 works that explore the tension between East and West and the search for unfiltered self-expression.Running until 25th June at the Society’s galleries on Republic Street, the exhibition features approximately 23 pieces in total, including ten large-scale works drawn primarily from two of the artist’s series, as well as smaller still life and landscape paintings.Hui Sun works across multiple media, including oil, watercolour, ink, and clay sculpture.“I use many materials in my creations… I also do some clay sculpting: I love its unique texture, and painting on it,” he said, describing a practice shaped by both material experimentation and emotional intensity. His works often originate from responses to historical and contemporary events, driven by impulse and strong affect. The exhibition takes its title from a curatorial response to the work itself. Curator Marta Obiols Fornell described a “strange sense of dizziness, a space in motion” when engaging with the paintings, noting their “sense of imbalance and disruption” that encourages viewers to search for stillness beyond the surface.According to the curator, the exhibition is structured around four thematic spaces- introduction, fantasy, vertigo and revolution- each reflecting different aspects of the central idea. “I think exhibitions curate themselves,” she said, reflecting on her long-standing engagement with the artist and the development of the project since 2024.The artist, meanwhile, emphasises a process of revision and destruction as part of his practice.“I need to revise and feel the picture again and again… often getting stuck in a rut, which requires me to destroy most of the painting and reconsider,” he explained, describing a method that combines emotional urgency with structural reworking. Some works in Vertigo engage directly with difficult subject matter, including violence and bullying. Hui Sun has stated that he aims to reflect the “true face of humanity,” combining melancholy and warmth rather than idealised positivity.President of the Malta Society of Arts Dr Joe Borg said the exhibition makes effective use of the gallery’s scale, noting that the works are “well-accommodated by the MSA’s large gallery spaces,” shaping a distinctive visitor experience.Admission to “Vertigo” is free. The exhibition will be open Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.
