Motor workers rally against fuel price hike in Thrissur - The HinduPublished - May 26, 2026 08:23 pm IST - ThrissurStepping up protests against rising fuel prices, the Private Motor Workers Union (AITUC) staged a march to the BSNL office in Thrissur and staged a dharna there on Tuesday, accusing petroleum companies and the Union government of burdening the public with repeated price hikes.The protest, led by the union’s district committee, was inaugurated by AITUC district secretary T.K. Sudheesh, with district president K.K. Haridas presiding. Leaders said the continued increase in petrol and diesel prices — despite a fall in crude oil rates in the international market — was unjustifiable and anti-people.Speakers also criticised the timing of the hikes, alleging that the Centre imposed additional financial strain on citizens soon after elections to State Assemblies.The union warned that the auto and taxi sector is already under severe pressure due to rising spare parts costs, increased taxes, and penalties. The latest fuel price hike, they said, has further deepened the crisis.Protesters demanded a timely revision of auto and taxi fares, pointing out that there has been no rate hike in the past four years. They also called for stricter regulation of app-based taxi services like Uber, alleging unfair competition in the sector.Published - May 26, 2026 08:23 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
