Bruno Fernandes has revealed how close he came to joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2019, before Sporting ultimately blocked the move. There have been so many near misses in the transfer market for Tottenham Hotspur in recent years.Spurs fans will recall just last season how their club came so close to signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace, only for Spurs to miss out to Arsenal, who swooped in at the last minute. Then Morgan Gibbs-White became another famous near miss from last summer’s window, with Tottenham even activating his release clause before Nottingham Forest tied the midfielder down to a new deal.Gibbs-White only went on to have a stellar campaign with Forest, hitting double figures for goals with 15 and dragging the Tricky Trees to Premier League safety.Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty ImagesTottenham missed out on Bruno Fernandes in 2019But these near misses did not just start last summer; back in 2019, Tottenham were also in the running to sign Paulo Dybala, but ultimately failed to land his signature.Spurs Web has since reported that Dybala is open to a Premier League move, although many Lilywhites supporters believe it is now too late for the club to pursue a deal. That same summer, Spurs were clearly in the market for a creative player as they looked to take a big next step under Mauricio Pochettino and splash the cash after not spending any money on new signings in the previous window. Tottenham’s search brought them to Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes, but again they missed out, instead securing Tanguy Ndombele as their marquee creative signing.Speaking to Steven Bartlett, Fernandes has now explained how close he came to joining Tottenham before Sporting pulled the plug on the move at the last minute. He said, “Yeah, I spoke with Tottenham and we were very close to getting an agreement done. Then in the last two days of the market, Sporting just said we are not going to sell him. We’re going to keep him because we need him.“Obviously I was lucky enough that my dream club to play in England was Manchester United and obviously Tottenham at the time was the option I had but it didn’t happen and for bigger reasons I guess. Then in January I got the call that I was hoping for, for two or three years already.”What really happened when Spurs approached Bruno Fernandes?? pic.twitter.com/QUuXoIpL6A— Steven Bartlett (@StevenBartlett) May 25, 2026Bruno Fernandes and Harry Kane partnership remains a huge what-ifThere is no denying the impact Bruno Fernandes has had in the Premier League since moving from Portugal around six years ago.Spurs could well have done with a player of his quality as they battled relegation this season and were void of creativity and goals. While the Manchester United midfielder has not won the league title and suffered a Europa League final defeat to Spurs last campaign, his individual performances are up there with the very best to have graced the division.Fernandes has now broken the all-time assist record in a Premier League season, reaching 21 this campaign and surpassing the previous mark of 20 set by both Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. With such creativity and vision, many will be left wondering what he could have achieved alongside Harry Kane, had one of football’s finest creators linked up with one of the game’s deadliest finishers.READ MORE: Roberto De Zerbi reveals ‘secret’ of how Antonin Kinsky almost became Tottenham captainThe post Bruno Fernandes opens up on collapsed Tottenham transfer after Player of the Season win appeared first on Spurs Web.
