There was a huge upset in the first round of the French Open of the Men’s singles on Tuesday afternoon.Roland Garros got underway on Sunday and will run until the start of June in the second Grand Slam tournament of the year.Kouame made history with his first round French Open win over Cilic on TuesdayJannik Sinner is tipped to go the distance in Paris this time around having won both the Monte Carlo Masters and the Italian Open.However, it is Moise Kouame who has stolen the headlines on day three as the French teenager got the better of Marin Cilic on his Grand Slam debut.Kouame claimed a three-set victory on Court Simonne-Mathieu as the Parisian wildcard beat 2014 US Open winner Cilic 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-1.In the process, Kouame made history, becoming the youngest player in the Open era to defeat a Grand Slam champion in Men’s Singles at Roland Garros.At the age of just 17 years and 81 days, Kouame surpassed Michael Chang by just 16 days, the American having held the record for 37 years.Chang went on to win the French Open in 1989 as he beat Stefan Edberg in a five-set thriller.Kouame now advances to the second round, where he will take on Adolfo Daniel Vallejo.After receiving one of eight available tournament wildcards, Kouame said before the French Open began: “It is a privilege for me to be here that young. “It’s an opportunity not everyone gets to have. I’m going to try to enjoy it as much as possible.”Kouame was one of eight wildcards for Roland GarrosKouame’s only other appearance in the main draw of an ATP tournament came at the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this year, where he had a practise session with Sinner.The World No.1 gets his French Open campaign underway later on Tuesday when he faces Frenchman Clement Tabur.Sinner is widely expected to win the French Open this year having reached the semi-finals in 2024 and the final last year.The Italian ultimately lost to Carlos Alcaraz in 2025 as the Spaniard won the tournament for the second time.However, a wrist injury forced Alcaraz to sit out the bulk of the European clay swing, while the two-time champion will also miss Wimbledon later this year.
