Wait 5 sec.

The Malta Ranger Unit has publicly criticised comments made by Minister for the Economy,Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri regarding hunting licenses and fines for convicted poachers. In a statement shared online, MRU said it was “shocked” by remarks circulating on social media in which Schembri allegedly suggested that hunters who had their licenses revoked by Maltese courts could apply again to regain them, while fines would also be “reviewed”.The NGO argued that Malta already has weaker enforcement compared to other European countries, noting that convicted poachers in Malta can continue hunting during the appeal process.MRU also stressed that hunting should be viewed as “a privilege” linked to conservation and biodiversity, rather than a guaranteed right. The organisation warned that political support for convicted poachers undermines environmental protection, the justice system and Malta’s EU environmental commitments, including the EU’s 30×30 biodiversity targets.MRU concluded by warning that it “will not remain silent” if such changes are pursued. What do you make of MRU’s criticism?Image: Malta Ranger Unit via Il-Vuċi tal-Poplu •
