Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake at 22 km depth24 May 04:17 UTC: First to report: EMSC after 3 minutes.24 May 04:18: Magnitude recalculated from 4.5 to 4.6.24 May 04:28: Now using data updates from USGSUpdate Sun, 24 May 2026, 04:27Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 75 km northwest of Valdivia, ChileThe European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Chile near Valdivia, Provincia de Valdivia, Region de los Rios, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Saturday, May 23rd, 2026, at 11:14 pm local time at a shallow depth of 21.10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Vuelta de la Zorra (pop. 50) located 60 km from the epicenter, and Corral (pop. 5,100) 64 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Valdivia (pop. 133,400) located 75 km from the epicenter, Las Animas (pop. 30,000) 77 km away, and La Union (pop. 26,300) 115 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt24.9–156 km (3.1–97 mi)81 km (50 mi)II: Very weak shaking377–127 km (48–79 mi)94 km (58 mi)III: Weak shaking463–84 km (39–52 mi)75 km (47 mi)IV: Light shaking766–84 km (41–52 mi)75 km (47 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (18 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 4 km2 (2 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 3 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)May 24, 2026 04:14 am (Universal Time)15 minutes ago - felt4.622 km0 km - This quakeSouth Pacific Ocean, 76 km W of Valdivia, Provincia de Valdivia, Region de los Rios, ChileMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 56 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 40 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.08 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 12.7 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 0.47 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 2.1 years)Mag. 4 or higher: 3.8 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 28.2 quakes per yearMag. 2 or higher: 40 quakes per year (or 3.3 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity.
