If Jim Carrey is known for anything, it’s the many larger-than-life characters he’s played in film for the past three decades. The 64-year-old actor has several iconic roles under his belt, from Ace Ventura to Dr. Robotnik (Sonic the Hedgehog). But looking more closely, three of his most memorable performances have been characters who are mostly, well, green. In 1994, Carrey played the titular cartoonish, green-faced antihero in Chuck Russell’s comedy caper The Mask. The following year, he donned green spandex and became the infamous Rogues’ Gallery villain, The Riddler, in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, opposite Val Kilmer’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader. And in 2000, he stepped into Dr. Seuss’ Whoville as the hairy green grouch, the Grinch, in Ron Howard’s film of the same name.Credit: Universal PicturesRelated: Jim Carrey’s Grinch Return Divides Fans in New Video, Takes Cheap Shot at DisneyBut while Carrey has played Ace Ventura twice and will return to play Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in 2027, he has yet to play any of those green characters more than once.Last year, Cameron Diaz was asked by Access Hollywood whether she’d return as Tina Carlyle in a potential sequel to The Mask, to which she replied, “If Jim’s on board, I’ve been riding those coat-tails from day one!” According to the reporter, Carrey also said he’d be open to returning as Stanley Ipkiss. However, the actor has yet to publicly comment on this.Credit: New Line CinemaMeanwhile, rumors of a sequel to The Grinch have circulated for years. Now, new reports suggest that Universal is developing another live-action movie, although nothing has been confirmed and it’s unknown whether Carrey would even return to the role.In an interview with Comicbook.com in December 2024, the actor said he’d be open to returning to play the character through motion capture performance after explaining how “excruciating” the make-up and prosthetics process was while making the 2000 film.“With motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things,” he said, adding, “Anything is possible in this world.” If this ever happens, it would mark Carrey’s second time in mo-cap, having played Ebenezer Scrooge in the 3D-animated film, Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009) from director Robert Zemeckis.Credit: DisneyAs for The Riddler, while Carrey’s unforgettable version of the character has also yet to return to the big screen, the character himself has recently returned in a much smaller capacity, in the brand-new open-world video game, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which launched across all major platforms on May 22. However, Carrey’s villain has been recast. The new game features several versions of iconic Batman villains from across film, but without the actors who brought them to life on the silver screen. These include Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman, now voiced by Clara Emanuel, Tom Hardy’s Bane, with Matt Berry now in the role, and Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face (another Batman Forever villain), with Rich Keeble lending his vocal talents. And The Riddler, who appears to embody some of Carrey’s iconic traits while also drawing inspiration from other iterations, is voiced by Matthew Curtis. The same can be said about Legacy of the Dark Knight’s Joker (voiced by Ewan Bailey), who’s an amalgamation of both Jack Nicholson’s portrayal in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Heath Ledger’s version in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008)The full cast for Legacy of the Dark Knight was revealed on social media on launch day by Shai Matheson, who voices Bruce Wayne/Batman in the game. The actor wrote:“MEET THE CAST! LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is out TODAY, and we wanted to introduce you to the heroes and villains of Gotham City and the people that brought them to life. Performances cast, recorded and directed at @sideglobal.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shai (@shaimatheson)While Carrey hasn’t returned to lend his voice to the LEGO version of The Riddler, here’s hoping we get to see his version of the character return in a big-screen Batman movie one day.As for the return of the Grinch and the Mask, we can’t imagine Carrey turning down an opportunity to reprise those roles, even if one is in animated form the next time around.Would you like to see Jim Carrey reprise any of his iconic roles?
