Watch: ‘Alien’ Creature Filmed In Maltese Waters Identified As Green Spoonworm

Wait 5 sec.

A bizarre alien-like creature filmed in Maltese waters has people seriously questioning whether first contact just happened. But according to marine biologist Alan Deidun, the strange pulsating organism is actually a female green spoonworm, scientifically known as Bonellia viridis. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Sharing the clip online alongside dramatic “alien invasion” music, Deidun jokingly teased followers into thinking the creature might be from another planet before revealing its real identity.“Not at all….this is a female individual of the green spoonworm Bonellia viridis,” he explained. And things somehow get even weirder. The species is known for one of nature’s most extreme examples of sexual dimorphism, with the female growing much larger while the male is only a few millimetres long and lives attached to, or inside the female. That long pulsating appendage terrifying viewers in the video? It’s actually the worm’s proboscis, which it uses for feeding. The clip was captured by Beatrice Lang, who Deidun thanked for the footage.Honestly, Malta’s underwater world never disappoints. So what’s your verdict, alien life or a simple spoonworm?Video credits to @alandeidun•
