The smallest normal set we’ve seen in a while, the Pokemon Trading Card Game Mega Evolution: Chaos Rising is a TCG expansion that clocks in at 122 cards. We don’t mind that! It’s more manageable. But it means you really need to find the ones you want to justify picking up a pack. So we’re here to help you find the best Chaos Rising cards. The coolest Pokemon Chaos Rising cards The focus of the set remains Legends Z-A, with a special emphasis on the endgame. As a concept, it’s fun! You have Mega Floette ex taking over Prism Tower by literally playing a new Stadium card over the tower. We don’t know that the benefit, 150 extra HP, is worth the hassle? But it’s flavorfully fun. And it helps that Floette itself is a powerful Basic that loads up your bench with energy cards. There are likely other great companions for it, but one option shows up in the set: Xerneas. Once you’ve got it up and running, you can use the one-prize legendary to deal 30 damage per attached energy cards on your team. It makes at least some sense for a creature with different variants? Each has moves that suggest their stat specializations. But since they aren’t game-breakingly good, and since them sharing a name means you’ll have trouble playing them in the same deck with any effectiveness, it’s probably just a fun curiosity. Still: weird to open a pack and get two Deoxys in it before you even get to the rare! We’re also intrigued by the bizarre edge case prints in this set. Mega Dragalge ex deals 160 damage, but as a poison. Ferrothorn is a massive 8-card mill, but only if your opponent discards it. Transformation Tome lets you swap a Basic in your discard for one in play, retaining all attachments, but you have to have two of them to make this swap of seemingly limited use happen. Photo by Siliconera The most meta-relevant Pokemon Chaos Rising cards Our initial instinct is that we’re going to see these new Special Energy cards. Bubbly Water Energy cures and prevents special conditions. Nitro Fire Energy returns to your hand if it’s discarded by your attack. And those are nice? As a bonus, at least. The biggest game changer feels like Magnetic Metal Energy. Its bonus is zero retreat cost, and for a type that is often exceedingly heavy! Unlocking a stick-and-move strategy for this type could make new decks viable. There’s a chance that Delphox could see some play? Its ability discards a fire energy to draw up to seven. Stage 2 is a big ask, but there are some synergies with fire energies and discard piles that could make it worth the effort. And the set clearly wants you to care about Mega Greninja ex. Its ability lets you discard a water energy from your hand once per turn to place six damage counters on any opponent. It needs to be Active to use, so it works well with Surfing Beach (which got a new special print in this set), and new trainer Great Haul Net lets you refill your deck with the energy cards you need. Its attack isn’t so bad if it’s stuck out there too? Photo by Siliconera The cutest Chaos Rising cards Generally, these Pokemon TCG cards involve the usual suspects, like Vulpix and Froakie and Phanpy. But hey, we like ‘em! So that’s fine. There are a few we enjoy more than usual, too. Litleo hanging out in a tree does a bit to make it feel friendlier than its placid default stance. And Delibird is in as close to flight as it’s gonna get, which is endearing! The latest Pokemon Trading Card Game set, Mega Evolution: Chaos Rising, officially launches on May 22, 2026.
