Tibetan Community in Ontario Celebrates Year of Compassion Commemorating the 90th Birth Anniversary of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in Downtown TorontoToronto, Ontario: As part of the global “Year of Compassion” initiative launched by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) to commemorate the 90th birth anniversary of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the Tibetan community in Ontario organised a day-long public celebration at Sankofa Square in downtown Toronto on 24 May 2026.The celebration was attended by several distinguished guests and speakers, including Chief Guest Member of Parliament James Maloney, Special Guests Member of Provincial Parliament Alexa Gilmour, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.Keynote speakers included former Ratoe Monastery Abbot Venerable Nicholas Vreeland (Thupten Lhundub), Venerable Dr Bhante Saranapala, Khenpo Dr Kunga Sherab, International Campaign for Tibet President Tenchoe Gyatso, former MPP Bhutila Karpoche, and Dr Amber Marie Moore from the University of Toronto. The speakers highlighted the Four Principal Commitments of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, universal values of compassion, peace, non-violence, and interfaith harmony promoted by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and reflected on the significance of his lifelong contributions to humanity.The event was jointly organised by various Tibetan associations in Ontario, including the Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario (CTAO), Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre (TCCC), Dhokham Chushi Gangdruk Canada, Tibetan Women’s Association of Ontario, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress Toronto (RTYC), Students for Free Tibet Toronto (SFT), Ontario Dhomey Cholkha, and Ontario U-Tsang Cholkha.The landmark event featured photo exhibitions highlighting the life, legacy, and Four Principal Commitments of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, alongside displays showcasing Tibetan culture, traditions, and values. The celebration drew thousands of attendees, including members of the local Tibetan, supporters of Tibet, friends of Tibet, and members of the public, creating a dynamic space for cultural exchange and education.The programme featured an immersive array of educational exhibitions, lively performances and interactive activities aimed at promoting compassion, peace, and awareness of Tibetan culture. A dedicated photo exhibition on the life and teachings of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama highlighted his Four Principal Commitments, while an interactive “Compassion Pledge” encouraged participants to commit to daily acts of kindness and compassion.Exhibitions on Tibetan fields of knowledge (Rig-ne) introduced visitors to Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, psychology & pratices based on the Ancient Nalanda tradition, traditional Tibetan medicine and astrology, as well as Tibetan arts and crafts, including thangka painting. Live demonstrations of sand mandala creation and intricate Tibetan calligraphy were also presented during the event.Traditional Tibetan opera, songs, and cultural dances were performed throughout the programme, concluding with a community Gorshey circle dance. The event also featured a cultural marketplace offering authentic Tibetan artisan goods and traditional cuisine.
