The Philadelphia Union made a major shake up in their front office following a disappointing first half of the 2026 MLS season.Bradley Carnell has been fired as head coach of the Eastern Conference club, the Union announced Wednesday. Union II head coach Ryan Richter has been named the interim head coach of the first team.In addition, Jon Scheer has been named the club’s new sporting director while Ernst Tanner remains on suspended leave by MLS. Tanner had been out of the Union’s plans since March after being under investigation for misconduct.Tanner was key in the arrival of several former Union standouts including Kai Wagner, Jakob Glesnes, Jack Elliott, Mikael Uhre, and Julian Carranza. Carnell originally took over as Union first team head coach ahead of the 2025 MLS season and led the club to the Supporters’ Shield, a second in franchise history. However, things did not carry over into 2026, with the Union winning just one of their opening 15 league matches this year. Currently, the Union are bottom of the Eastern Conference with seven points earned. “I want to thank the fans, the players, the staff, and everyone involved with this club for the support and commitment during my time here,” said Carnell. “I’m proud of what we accomplished together and grateful for the relationships and memories we built along the way. To my staff and especially the players, thank you for your hard work and dedication through both the highs and the challenges, you inspired me every day and I appreciate the opportunity to have been part of this team.”Scheer has been an integral part of the Union organization since 2018. He has served as Director of Academy and Professional Development and most recently as interim sporting director in Tanner’s absence.“Jon has consistently demonstrated strong leadership, a deep understanding of our club philosophy, and a clear vision for the future of the Philadelphia Union,” said Union principal owner Jay Sugarman. “As we enter a new chapter for the organization, we are confident in Jon’s ability to lead our sporting operations and get us back on track with a culture centered around development, ambition, and sustained success.”Richter played professionally for seven years, after being drafted No. 5 overall in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft by the Union. He later served in various coaching roles within the organization beginning in 2018 and was a first team assistant head coach from 2022-2024, before being appointed to his most recent role as Union II’s head coach in January 2025.The Union will return to MLS action on July 22 against the New York Red Bulls, hoping a change in personnel will lead to a bounce-back second half of the season.
