The system doesn’t need to be tightened up, scammers are unimportant to food stamps compared to the possibility that someone else who does need help goes hungry. Private organizations, especially small ones, absolutely, but not the public system. The cost/benefit to society ratio of food stamps is so heavily weighted towards being a net positive for society that it’s not even close. Every dollar spent on food stamps puts almost two into the economy, and I’m not even sure if that counts the support for agriculture that food assistance programs provide. Pretty sure that it definitely doesn’t include the benefits of children who would not otherwise have enough to eat getting a better education and life outcomes because they aren’t starving all of the time, and the overall health benefits of nobody outright starving, especially children who are too old for WIC and other child nutrition programs, but are still growing and developing. No one deserves to starve, not even the worst murderer. Food stamps are not something that should be tightened up, the danger to others and society as a whole is too much for even the worst scammers to overcome
