Samsung may have settled on names for its two upcoming foldable flagships. SamMobile has learned that the company is planning to call them the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The interesting part is which model gets which name. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will be the direct successor to 2025's Galaxy Z Fold 7, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 name is going to the wider model that has been showing up in rumors and leaks as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. The Fold 8 is expected to be wider and shorter than the Ultra, similar to Apple’s foldable iPhone. But the wider form factor will come with some trade-offs. The phone will drop one of the rear cameras, similar to the Galaxy S25 Edge.Ultra branding risks diluting what the word representsWhile calling the wider model the Fold 8 seems like a sound decision, the Ultra branding for the more premium Fold 8 will undoubtedly raise some questions. Samsung's Galaxy S Ultra smartphones have set a high bar with features such as S Pen support and a 5x telephoto camera in addition to a 3x telephoto. The Galaxy S26 Ultra also adds 60W wired and 25W wireless charging to the mix, along with the unique, world’s first Privacy Display. The Fold 8 Ultra is said to bring some welcome upgrades over the Fold 7 and older models, including a 5,000 mAh battery, 45W charging, and a 50MP ultrawide camera. But a Privacy Display, S Pen support, 60W charging, and a more powerful zoom camera are not expected to be part of the package, so it risks diluting what the word Ultra represents. It's also worth noting that Apple's first foldable is rumored to launch as the iPhone Ultra. Whether that had any bearing on Samsung's naming decision is hard to say, but the timing is interesting. That said, Samsung has been using the Ultra name for its Galaxy S lineup since 2020, so it's not like the company is taking any cues from Apple here. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup, along with the Galaxy Z Flip 8, is expected to launch at Samsung's next Unpacked event on July 22. Samsung could also raise prices for its new foldables, similar to what it did with the Galaxy S26 series. Browse Samsung discounts and offers Samsung Store
