Digital Realty Opens First Data Center in BarcelonaDigital Realty Trust, Inc.BATS:DLRKalaGhaziDigital Realty (NYSE: DLR), recognized as the world's largest cloud- and carrier-neutral data center platform, has announced the official opening of its first data center in Barcelona. The new facility, designated BCN1, is located in the Sant Adrià de Besòs innovation area, a rapidly developing hub for technology and digital infrastructure on the northeastern edge of the city. This strategic expansion reflects Digital Realty's broader commitment to supporting the development of the Mediterranean region into a global digital infrastructure hub for next-generation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. The opening of BCN1 also reinforces Barcelona's growing role as a critical interconnection point alongside other major Mediterranean digital hubs, including Madrid, Marseille, Athens, Heraklion, Rome, and Lisbon. Together, these cities form an interconnected network of digital gateways that facilitate data flow across Southern Europe, North Africa, and beyond. Technical Specifications and Strategic Connectivity The BCN1 data center is designed with a total planned capacity of 14 megawatts (MW), positioning it as a meaningful addition to Digital Realty's regional portfolio. The facility is purpose-built to support high-density connectivity with a broad range of network providers and is strategically located near the intersection of major global connectivity routes. This location enables low-latency connectivity between several key regions, including the Americas, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. BCN1 is designed to complement Digital Realty's established campus in Marseille, France, enhancing network diversity and resilience across the Western Mediterranean. Subsea cables that land in Barcelona are interconnected with Marseille, creating a seamless digital corridor. Furthermore, cross-border fiber links connecting Barcelona to both Marseille and Frankfurt further strengthen the city's role in managing regional and international data traffic flows. These redundant, high-capacity connections ensure that customers can rely on consistent performance even in the face of localized disruptions. Supporting the Digitalization of the Catalan Economy The opening of BCN1 also supports the continued digitalization of the Catalan economy. The new facility joins Digital Realty's existing data center offerings on the Iberian Peninsula, which include the recently announced data center in Lisbon, Portugal, as well as four facilities currently operating in Madrid, Spain. Taken together, the data centers in Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon form the most interconnected regional platform on the Iberian Peninsula. This interconnected footprint further enhances Digital Realty's already leading EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) presence, providing customers with a seamless, pan-peninsular infrastructure for deploying AI workloads, localizing data, and managing digital transformation initiatives. Executive Commentary Fabrice Coquio, Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Europe Med at Digital Realty, commented on the announcement. "Barcelona is emerging as a world-class digital gateway to the Mediterranean," Coquio said. "Digital Realty's Barcelona Campus puts us right at the heart of that transformation, and the facility has been built to the highest sustainability standards. Together with our existing campuses in Madrid and Lisbon, we are proud to offer our customers a highly interconnected and environmentally responsible regional platform on the Iberian Peninsula." Barcelona's Rise as a Digital Infrastructure Hub Barcelona is rapidly emerging as a key digital infrastructure hub in Southwestern Europe. This rise is supported by sustained growth in the local data center market, rising investment in network connectivity, and the ongoing expansion of high-capacity subsea cable systems. Several strategic subsea cable landings are strengthening the region's connectivity footprint. Notable cables landing in Barcelona include 2Africa and Medusa, while other major systems—such as Marea, Grace Hopper, and EllaLink—land elsewhere on the Iberian Peninsula. Collectively, these cables dramatically increase the region's international bandwidth and resilience. Looking ahead, Barcelona's total data center capacity is expected to scale meaningfully through the year 2030, reflecting continued demand growth and the city's expanding role as a regional hub for digital services. Analysts expect that both domestic Catalan enterprises and international cloud providers will increasingly rely on Barcelona-based infrastructure to serve Southern European and North African markets. PlatformDIGITAL® Expansion and Sustainability Commitments The opening of BCN1 further extends PlatformDIGITAL®, Digital Realty's global data center platform. PlatformDIGITAL® enables international and local businesses to rapidly scale their AI deployments and data localization efforts in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. By connecting customers to the data communities that matter most to them, the platform helps organizations manage the challenges associated with Data Gravity—the phenomenon whereby large datasets become increasingly difficult to move as they grow. Digital Realty is also a signatory to the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, an industry-led commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2030. In line with this pledge, Digital Realty has designed BCN1 to meet and exceed the industry's highest standards for energy efficiency. The facility incorporates advanced power and cooling architectures, procures renewable energy to offset its consumption, and utilizes backup generators fueled by HVO100—a biodiesel of renewable origin, often referred to as hydrotreated vegetable oil. These measures reinforce the company's commitment to decarbonization at every layer of its operations, balancing the high demand for AI-ready facilities with rigorous environmental sustainability practices.
