Former Tottenham goalkeeper Joe Hart believes Cristian Romero’s emotional struggles and controversies this season could point towards an inevitable summer exit from North London.Cristian Romero has struggled to stay away from attention throughout the season after being named Tottenham Hotspur captain at the beginning of the campaign.Looking back now, Spurs may regret that decision slightly given what followed was controversy after controversy involving the Argentine defender. Romero repeatedly hit back publicly at the Tottenham hierarchy throughout the season, often through social media, with many supporters appreciating it even if the manner of it felt unprofessional from a club captain. However, what frustrated fans was his disciplinary record. The centre-back missed seven matches through suspension across the season, something supporters understandably do not expect from a captain who is supposed to lead by example during one of the club’s most difficult campaigns in recent memory. The controversy surrounding Romero arguably reached its peak when reports emerged that he had travelled to Argentina to watch his boyhood club Belgrano in a title clash rather than support Tottenham during their final-day relegation decider against Everton. After heavy backlash from supporters, Romero eventually flew back to London and was present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the final game of the season. Despite that, the expectation remains that the defender could still leave Spurs this summer.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramJoe Hart questions Cristian Romero’s leadership at TottenhamSpeaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, former Tottenham goalkeeper Joe Hart admitted he believes Romero will likely move on from the club this summer.“I think he’ll move himself on,” Hart said.“I think it’s been really difficult and the hardest thing for me to watch is in big moments he’s not been able to control his emotions.“I was at Old Trafford and I remember Tottenham starting well and then he lost the ball in a moment where he feels he shouldn’t and because of that a switch went in his head and he nailed someone over the ball. Red card in such an important game.“I couldn’t imagine that guy leading me. There’s no doubt he’s a brilliant player and you can’t take that emotion out of him.“But to put that at the forefront of it and let him do his thing, I think is a really difficult one for Spurs.”Tottenham already preparing for life after Cristian RomeroEarlier in the season, some reports had already labelled Romero as a “rebel” because of how often he publicly criticised the club hierarchy. At this point, a summer departure may honestly suit all parties involved, especially with the Argentine clearly appearing frustrated during large periods of the campaign.Joe Hart’s prediction also feels increasingly realistic given Romero’s recent end-of-season social media post contained very little indication that he sees himself remaining at Tottenham next season.Meanwhile, Spurs are already actively targeting centre-backs in the market. Roberto De Zerbi’s side reportedly have a verbal agreement in place for Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, while recent reports have also linked Tottenham with a move for Manchester City veteran John Stones. That interest in Stones would particularly make sense if Romero leaves, given Spurs would not only lose one of their best defenders but also a major voice within the dressing room leadership group.READ MORE: ‘Don’t bother coming back’ – Three former Tottenham players slam Cristian RomeroThe post ‘I couldn’t imagine that guy leading me’ – Joe Hart calls out senior Tottenham star appeared first on Spurs Web.
