One of the most influential works of twentieth-century literature is heading to the Maltese stage this June, with a new adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial set to take over Teatru Manoel.Il Processo (The Trial), starring acclaimed Italian actor Giovanni Costantino, promises an intense and immersive theatrical experience centred around Josef K., a man trapped inside a dark, absurd and unforgiving system. In a remarkable one-man performance, Costantino will not only portray Josef K. but also voice and embody 17 additional characters, bringing a total of 18 distinct personalities to life on stage through narration, movement and physical theatre. The production blends minimalist staging with soundscapes, projections and visual storytelling to recreate Kafka’s unsettling world while exploring themes of guilt, alienation and the illusion of freedom.Costantino returns to Malta following last year’s successful performance of Novecento – The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean, adding to a career that has seen him take on major theatrical roles across Italy. His previous works include Mastro Don Gesualdo by Giovanni Verga and Il giorno della civetta by Leonardo Sciascia, while Italian publication La Repubblica recently described him as “one of the most recognised and appreciated actors of his generation in the Italian theatrical scene”.The production is directed by renowned Italian theatre and opera director Andrea Battistini, whose career spans more than 30 years and includes productions of Shakespeare, Pirandello, Verdi and Mozart.Speaking about the show, Costantino said Il Processo was designed as “an experience that engages with the present”, encouraging audiences to reflect on themes that remain deeply relevant today. The performance will be staged in Italian with Maltese and English subtitles on 6th and 7th June at Teatru Manoel. The production is supported by the Embassy of Italy in Malta, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the University of Malta, Com.It.Es., the Accademia Italiana della Cucina, the Italiani.it Foundation, and The Islands of Malta & Sicily Foundation.Tickets are now available online.Share with someone you think would be interested!•
