/u/PullMyFinger4Fun on Fund $300 worth of Decorations For My Child's 1st Birthday

Wait 5 sec.

My parents had 9 kids of which I was the penultimate child. Every birthday anyone had was celebrated with a cake, candles and the song. My parents would buy one gift for the child. No decorations, no parties, just everyone sitting around the table while my mom brought in the cake. That was plenty for us. I remember that for my 15th birthday, my mom bought me a used copy of the A Treasury of Great Science Fiction, Volume 2 for which she paid 25 cents. I really liked that book and still have it today, only 58 years after that birthday. So what I'm saying is that if you have the resources and wish to do it, you can go all out with something expensive that will fade from everyone's memory within days, or you can stay within your means and still have a meaningful celebration.
