How Sweet It Is: Mint Julep Goes to Sweet Treasure

Wait 5 sec.

Pin Up Betty (Constitution) may have been looking for a repeat in the GIII Old Forester Mint Julep Stakes, but it was Full of Run Racing II LLC and Frank Silva's Sweet Treasure (f, 4, Twirling Candy–Stellium, by Empire Maker) who led every step of the way to capture the 1 1/16-mile turf contest on Stephen Foster Preview Day at Churchill Downs Saturday. It marked the dark bay's first stakes score.Despite Pin Up Betty–with her distinctive blinkers–breaking sharpest of all, it was Sweet Treasure from the farthest outside post who sped to the front and angled over to the inside to lead comfortably. With ears flicking back and forth and looking extremely relaxed as she coasted through :24.04 and :48.28 fractions, Sweet Treasure allowed Pin Up Betty–who tracked from second–as close as half a length on the turn, then repelled her as Irish G3-placed Vina Arana (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) cut the corner to her inside and put a nose in front. Sweet Treasure was far from done, fighting back to the front as well as holding off a late-flying Proctor Street (Street Sense), who was most recently third in the GIII Modesty Stakes over this course on Kentucky Oaks day, by a half-length at the wire. Vina Arana held for third. It was a compact bunch who crossed the line with about four lengths separating the winner from seventh-place Pin Up Betty, who yielded in the stretch. On turf her whole career, Sweet Treasure has done little wrong. Winner of four races previous to the Mint Julep as she marched through her conditions, the $155,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October buy's three earlier black-type tries included a third in both last November's GIII Pebbles Stakes at Aqueduct and in February's Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds, the latter behind GI Jenny Wiley deadheat victress Expensive Queen (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Sweet Treasure was last seen scoring in a Keeneland allowance over the Mint Julep distance Apr. 14 with a career-high 90 Beyer Speed Figure.Pedigree Notes:Lane's End's Twirling Candy, a mainstay among the nation's leading sires, gets his 30th graded winner with Sweet Treasure's Mint Julep win. Also his 67th black-type winner, Sweet Treasure is Twirling Candy's first stakes winner out of a daughter of Empire Maker, but not his first from the Unbridled line, with GISW Gift Box being his most prominent example of the nick.Don Alberto Corporation purchased Sweet Treasure's granddam, Sacristy (Pulpit), for $700,000 at the 2013 Keeneland November sale. Winner of the 2012 GIII Old Hat Stakes and a half-sister to Japan's G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen winner Mozu Superflare (Speightstown), Sacristy's 10 foals to date include two black-type winning and graded-placed runners, as well as the unraced Stellium, who produced Sweet Treasure and a 3-year-old full-sister to the Mint Julep winner named Gentilly. The latter most recently brought $360,000 from Thirty Year Racing at the 2025 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale, while Stellium shipped to Chile, where Don Alberto has a massive presence, in 2024. ($6.96) and @iradortiz fought back in the deep stretch for trainer @bradcoxracing to win the 50th running of the Old Forester Mint Julep Stakes G3 at Churchill Downs.#TwinSpiresReplay pic.twitter.com/OmddpEqV0L— TwinSpires Racing (@TwinSpires) May 30, 2026 Saturday, Churchill DownsOLD FORESTER MINT JULEP S.-GIII, $269,500, Churchill Downs, 5-30, 4yo/up, f/m, 1 1/16mT, 1:40.29, fm.1–SWEET TREASURE, 118, f, 4, by Twirling Candy   1st Dam: Stellium, by Empire Maker   2nd Dam: Sacristy, by Pulpit   3rd Dam: Christies Treasure, by Belong to Me1ST BLACK TYPE WIN, 1ST GRADED STAKES WIN.
