Food Safety Authority Launches Precautionary Checks Following Fireworks Factory Explosion

The Food Safety and Security Authority (FSSA) has launched immediate precautionary measures following the firework factory explosion that occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning.In a statement, the Authority said it had activated its response mechanisms to assess whether debris, combustion residues or other contaminants from the explosion could have affected food, animal feed or agricultural produce in surrounding areas.Inspections, sampling exercises and risk assessments are currently underway and will continue as necessary.The FSSA said it is working closely with relevant authorities, farmers, food and feed producers, and food business operators to identify and address any potential risks as quickly as possible.“These efforts are intended to protect public health while providing producers with the necessary guidance and support,” the Authority said.The Authority sought to reassure the public that food and feed safety remains its highest priority, stressing that ongoing monitoring and science-based risk assessments are being carried out to ensure that food reaching Maltese households remains safe for consumption.Further updates are expected as investigations and assessments continue.•
