Ever since the historic fan fallout following the Disney sequel trilogy, released between 2015 and 2019, the iconic science-fiction franchise — birthed by George Lucas — has faced increasing uncertainty. In 2019, just weeks before Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019) dropped, The Walt Disney Company launched Disney+, and with it, the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. Since then, Lucasfilm has delivered a number of live-action and animated projects, including series and anthologies such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, The Bad Batch, and Star Wars Visions.Credit: LucasfilmMost recently, the Star Wars studio brought Maul–Shadow Lord to the small screen and once again proved that its power lies in animation. The legacy of Star Wars: The Clone Wars continued in Lucasfilm’s latest animated series and took fans into one of the franchise’s darkest corners yet.Announced during Star Wars Celebration Japan, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord marked the long-awaited return of one of the saga’s most enduring villains.Credit: LucasfilmDarth Maul’s Story Is Far From OverFew Star Wars characters have undergone a transformation quite like Darth Maul.Introduced in 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Maul (Ray Park/Peter Serafinowicz) was originally viewed as a one-film villain after his apparent defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). However, The Clone Wars dramatically expanded the character, bringing him back and exploring his obsession with revenge, power, and survival. The animated series elevated Maul (now voiced by Sam Witwer) into one of the franchise’s most layered antagonists. His rise through the criminal underworld eventually led to the creation of the Shadow Collective, while later appearances in Star Wars Rebels and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) hinted at stories that remained untold. Maul – Shadow Lord finally filled in some of those gaps.Credit: LucasfilmSet in the aftermath of The Clone Wars and the rise of the Empire, the series follows Maul as he attempts to rebuild his influence in a galaxy transformed by Order 66. Rather than focusing on Jedi versus Sith battles, the show explores the criminal underworld and the power vacuum left behind by the collapse of the Republic.A Darker Direction for Star Wars AnimationPrior to its release, Lucasfilm revealed that Maul – Shadow Lord would retain visual elements familiar to fans of The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and the studio’s recent animated projects. At the same time, the series introduces a noticeably darker aesthetic.According to comments made during the show’s announcement, the animation has been designed to feel more dangerous and reflect Maul’s perspective on the galaxy. Initial promotional artwork showcased sharper character designs and a more aggressive visual style than many previous Star Wars animated productions, and fans finally saw the result earlier this year.Credit: LucasfilmUnlike stories centered on hopeful heroes, Shadow Lord places one of the franchise’s most ruthless characters at the center of the narrative. The post-Clone Wars period is also one of the bleakest chapters in Star Wars history, with surviving Jedi scattered across the galaxy and Imperial rule tightening its grip.Meet Devon IzaraDespite Maul’s name being in the title, much of the conversation surrounding the series has focused on Devon Izara, voiced by Gideon Adlon. The young Force-sensitive character begins her journey as a Jedi Padawan under Master Eeko-Dio Daki (Dennis Haysbert). On the surface, the setup feels familiar to longtime fans. Like Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) before her, Devon enters the story as a young alien apprentice trying to navigate a rapidly changing galaxy. Both characters are introduced through mentor-student relationships, and both find themselves questioning the paths laid out before them.Credit: LucasfilmA Very Different Path From AhsokaOne of the defining moments in Ahsoka’s journey came when she chose to leave the Jedi Order after losing faith in the institution she had trusted for years. While her path was often difficult, she ultimately forged her own identity outside the traditional Jedi structure. Devon’s story is considerably darker.Following the death of her master, Eeko-Dio Daki, in the season finale, Devon finds herself consumed by grief and anger. Those emotions led her to become Maul’s apprentice after the latter pursued her for the majority of the season, sensing her potential power with the Force. This setup for Season 2, with Maul and Devon joining forces, ensures that Star Wars fans have their new Anakin and Ahsoka master and apprentice duo, almost two decades after The Clone Wars began.Credit: LucasfilmThat said, unlike Ahsoka, whose later appearances eventually revealed much of her fate, Devon enters Star Wars with a completely unwritten future. Fans genuinely do not know where her journey ends, whether redemption remains possible, or if she is destined to fall completely into darkness.Could Devon Become Star Wars‘ Next Breakout Character? What makes Devon’s introduction particularly notable is how quickly she has resonated with audiences.Ahsoka’s growth unfolded across multiple seasons of television and several different series. Devon’s character development has occurred over a much shorter period, yet many viewers have already identified her as one of the most compelling new additions to the Star Wars universe–with some theories even suggesting she could become the infamous Darth Talon from Star Wars Legends lore.Credit: LucasfilmLucasfilm appears to have recognized that potential, with a second season of Maul already in development before the first season even aired. As Star Wars continues expanding across animation, streaming, comics, and theatrical releases, Maul – Shadow Lord may be remembered not only as Darth Maul’s return, but as the moment a new generation of Star Wars storytelling truly began. How do you feel about this new master and apprentice addition to the Star Wars universe?
