Although it wasn’t scheduled to open until May 26, the new Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios soft-opened to guests on May 20. Now that the area is officially open, the reception from Walt Disney World Resort guests has been overwhelmingly positive, with families enjoying the random character encounters and the new “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” show. Unfortunately, just days after its grand opening, the replacement for the former Animation Courtyard is already showing signs of wear and tear.Wear and Tear in Walt Disney Studios Lot CourtyardCredit: Erica Lauren, Inside the MagicOn May 27, WDWNT reported that signs of guest-caused damage had already appeared around the Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Specifically, it appeared that Walt Disney World Resort guests had been particularly rough on some character statues positioned around the new area. The statues sit low to the ground or on the same level as benches, allowing guests to get up close and personal with their favorite characters. Kids have already been spotted climbing on the characters. The statue of Lucifer from Cinderella (1950) is already scuffed, especially around the cheeks and mouth. There are gray smudges on his face, likely from repeated touching.Credit: Erica Lauren, Inside the MagicPua from Moana (2016) and Thumper from Bambi (1942), who sit next to each other in a grassy area, also have scuff marks. Several spots of paint are already missing from Pua’s pink nose, revealing the sculpture’s gray interior. Some of the wear and tear, like dirt smudges and scuffs, will be easy for Walt Disney World Resort’s dedicated custodial team to fix overnight. Other things, like the missing Paint on Pua’s nose, will be more labor-intensive to fix. Time will tell if Disney keeps up with maintenance in the area, makes the sculptures more durable, or makes them inaccessible to theme park guests.Credit: Disney Parks BlogThe final portion of the Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard, The Magic of Disney Animation attraction, officially opens later this summer. Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t announced an exact date, but has shared that the experience will include a gallery, animation classes led by an audio-animatronic Olaf from Frozen (2013), several character meet-and-greets, and a playground inspired by Alice in Wonderland (1951).
