Curlin’s Original Sin Leads Home Gray Trifecta in Blame Upset

Wait 5 sec.

Calumet Farm homebred Original Sin (Curlin) was sent into the lead fully three furlongs from home in Saturday's GIII Blame Stakes at Churchill Downs and just managed to fend off Ohio-bred Who Dey (Liam's Map) for his first win at the black-type level. Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg}) was locked away in traffic for the first half of the stretch run and by the time he was able to shake loose, was only able to fill out the bottom of the triple in a race that had everyone seeing gray.Another similarly colored entrant, Liberal Arts (Arrogate), jumped straight into the bridle and took the Blame field along through its early exchanges, but Original Sin–no better than four deep into the clubhouse turn–was allowed to roll forward by Tyler Gaffalione to sit atypically handy to the pace from second.Off at 5-1 from a 15-1 morning line, Original Sin continued to clock the pace through the middle stages, but made the lead a long way out and soon had company in the form of Who Dey, who followed the move of Original Sin on the swing for home and popped out to loom a serious threat with a furlong and a half to travel.Original Sin was there for the taking and Who Dey–who opted for the Blame over a dramatically softer spot on Best of Ohio Day at Belterra Park on Friday–had every chance to claw on past, but Original Sin stuck on bravely for the victory. Hit Show, worse than midfield down the backstretch, looked to have some run, but was stymied behind Who Dey and the rallying Hall of Fame (Gun Runner). He shifted off the latter's heels at the furlong grounds and closed belatedly for third.A maiden winner going this venue's one-turn mile in the slop when having his first start for Brendan Walsh last October, Original Sin was a course-and-distance third the following month before clearing his first allowance condition in New Orleans Jan. 22. Having found all sorts of trouble when sixth of seven in the Big Easy Feb. 19, he most recently overcame a poor start and a wide passage around the second turn to dominate a nine-furlong Keeneland allowance Apr. 11.Pedigree Notes:Original Sin becomes the 121st stakes winner and 70th winner at the graded level for his sire, while he is the 249th black-type scorer–120th at the graded level–for Unbridled's Song.Brad Kelley's operation acquired dam Beauty and Light for $260,000 in foal to Honor Code at the 2021 Keeneland January Sale and the page appreciated in value when the mare's son Pingxiang won the Listed Subaru Stakes in Japan about four months before she foaled Original Sin in 2022.The third dam holds the bulk of the black-type in this family, as La Comete–a half-sister to GISW Icon Project (Empire Maker)–produced MGSW/MGISP sire Munnings (Speightstown), MSW & MGSP Munnings Sister (Speightstown) and the dam of UAE stakes-placed Speight'spercomete (Speightstown).Beauty and Light was sold to Saudi Arabian interests for $13,000 in foal to Calumet's Oxbow at KEENOV in 2024.Saturday, Churchill DownsBLAME S.-GIII, $290,000, Churchill Downs, 5-30, 4yo/up, 1 1/8m, 1:49.39, ft.1–ORIGINAL SIN, 118, c, 4, by Curlin                1st Dam: Beauty and Light, by Unbridled's Song                2nd Dam: Gaudete, by Distorted Humor                3rd Dam: La Comete, by Holy Bull   1ST BLACK TYPE WIN, 1ST GRADED STAKES WIN.O/B-Calumet Farm (KY); T-Brendan P.
