Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake at 750 km depth31 May 04:12 UTC: First to report: RaspberryShake after 7 minutes.31 May 04:12: Now using data updates from BMKGUpdate Sun, 31 May 2026, 04:15Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 40 km northwest of Atambua, IndonesiaIndonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Indonesia near Atambua, Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Sunday, May 31st, 2026, at 12:04 pm local time at a great depth of 750. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well.According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Atambua (pop. 82,200, 40 km away), Maubara (pop. 16,300, 66 km away), Kefamenanu (pop. 48,200, 70 km away), Kalabahi (pop. 19,200, 70 km away), Likisa (pop. 19,000, 81 km away), Suai (pop. 21,500, 85 km away), and Dili (pop. 150,000, 106 km away), the quake was probably not felt.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 4 km2 (2 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 3 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)May 31, 2026 12:04 pm (GMT +8)21 minutes ago4.6750 km0 km - This quakeSavu Sea, 40 km NW of Atambua, Kabupaten Belu, East Nusa Tenggara, IndonesiaMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 26 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 193 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.22 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 4.6 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 1.89 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 20.9 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 87 quakes per year (or 7.3 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 194 quakes per year (or 16.2 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
