Schools in Mysuru reopen amid merger concerns - The HinduPublished - June 01, 2026 08:37 pm IST - MYSURUAmid concerns among student activists that some government schools could be merged with larger institutions owing to dwindling enrolment, government schools across several villages in Mysuru district reopened successfully on the first day of the 2026–27 academic year.The development has been described by activists as the outcome of sustained public resistance against the KPS-Magnet project, which they feared could lead to the closure or merger of schools in rural areas.For several months, hundreds of parents, students, and residents staged protests at the village, taluk, and district levels against the proposed closure and merger of government schools. Protesters maintained that these institutions are not merely buildings but serve as key centres of learning for children from poor and working-class families.In a statement, the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation said that continuous public agitation and pressure played a crucial role in preventing the closure of several schools in the district. As schools reopened on Monday, AIDSO members welcomed students through special reception programmes.Published - June 01, 2026 08:37 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
