Women have secured 12 parliamentary seats following Saturday’s general election, more than doubling the number elected on counting day in 2022.Four years ago, just five seats went to women at this stage, marking the lowest representation of women in parliament in two decades. This year, ten women have been elected across 12 seats, with some candidates winning in more than one district. On the Labour side, five women were elected directly, including Julia Farrugia, Alison Zerafa Civelli, Miriam Dalli, Rosianne Cutajar and Alicia Bugeja Said. The PN also elected five women directly to parliament. These include Graziella Galea, Paula Mifsud Bonnici, Rebekah Borg and Eve Borg Bonello, while Janice Abela Chetcuti was elected through the proportionality mechanism. The increase means women now make up a significantly larger share of elected MPs compared to the last election, with further changes expected following casual elections and the activation of the gender corrective mechanism. What do you think of the increase in female representation in parliament?•
