The Malta Development Association (MDA) has congratulated the Labour Party and Prime Minister Robert Abela following their victory in Malta’s 2026 General Election.In a statement issued after the result, the MDA described the outcome as a reflection of the confidence placed by voters in the government to lead the country through the next legislature.The association also acknowledged the Nationalist Party and Opposition Leader Alex Borg for their role in the electoral campaign, saying the election demonstrated the strength of Malta’s democratic institutions and encouraged discussion on issues affecting the country’s future.The MDA said that a healthy democracy requires both a strong government and a strong opposition, while noting the electorate’s message on the importance of accountability, constructive debate and long-term national planning.With the election now over, the association said attention should turn towards addressing a number of national challenges, including housing affordability, infrastructure, planning reform, environmental sustainability, workforce development, economic competitiveness, energy security and quality of life.The organisation, which represents Malta’s development sector, said it looks forward to continuing dialogue with government, opposition parties, social partners and civil society organisations.The MDA also reaffirmed its support for policies aimed at sustainable growth, responsible investment and greater certainty for businesses and families.It concluded by wishing Prime Minister Robert Abela and the incoming administration success during the next legislature, while encouraging constructive engagement from the Opposition under Alex Borg’s leadership.What should be the government’s top priority over the next five years?•
