Bayern Munich could prioritise versatility as they search for a back-up option to Harry Kane, after Anthony Gordon’s surprise U-turn.The German giants looked nailed-on to secure the services of England forward Gordon, having agreed terms on a five-year-contract, only for Barcelona to swoop in.Gordon has signed a five-year deal at the Camp NouGettyBarca confirmed the 25-year-old’s arrival from Newcastle on Friday, who joined in a £70million move. This sends Bayern back to the drawing board in their transfer strategy, who appeared to have made Gordon their top target. The Bundesliga champions’ interest in the Englishman came as they looked to bolster their attacking options, who boast a deadly front three of Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. The trio contributed over 100 goals and assists altogether this season, and it appeared Gordon would provide competition for Diaz on the left wing, while he could also deputise in another role. With Nicolas Jackson set to return to Chelsea following his season-long loan, Bayern are again seeking back-up for starman Kane. This is where Gordon was expected to help, who has also previously been used a striker to great effect, most notably scoring four goals against Qarabag in the Champions League.Jack of all trades?Despite missing out on Gordon’s signature, European football journalist Kevin Hatchard believes Bayern will continue to prioritise versatility in their search for attacking cover.Speaking on talkSPORT’s Trans Europe Express, he began: “I think what’s really interesting, actually, is the fact that they were so heavily linked with Anthony Gordon.“I think the way they may approach it is to bring in somebody who can cover multiple positions. “Because I think they want somebody to back up Diaz on that left hand side. But also if they can play centre-forward, then great, and I think that’s probably the way they’ll look at it.Harry Kane fired in a staggering 36 Bundesliga goals this seasonGettyGettyAnd he was backed up by another reputable striker in Nicolas Jackson[/caption]“Obviously they can’t get Gordon now, but somebody like that.Outlining the profile of player Bayern could target, Hatchard highlighted Borussia Dortmund‘s Maxi Beier as an example, who is capable of playing across the front line. The journalist continued: “Not specifically him – but a player like a Maxi Beier, somebody who can play wide, can play through the middle, is going to do a job, is going to accept that they’re not going to be in that starting XI all the time, but they can be a pretty good member of that side. “I think when Serge Gnabry’s back fit, he was great in the no.10 for them. But that might be his role in the end. “He might end up being ‘Mr. Fix it’. So when there is a gap that needs filling, he’s the man to do that.”Whoever Bayern do end up signing will almost certainly have to accept playing second fiddle to Kane.Serge Gnabry missed this season’s run-in through injuryGetty Images - GettyThe England skipper has enjoyed an historic individual season, netting a staggering 61 goals in all competitions, smashing Robert Lewandowski‘s record for the most in a single campaign for the club. But Chelsea loanee Jackson was reliable when called upon, chipping in with eight goals in 23 appearances. And Hatchard insisted this is a role Bayern will need someone to play, as he praised the Senegalese for his contribution. He added: “I think they will fill that role. I think Jackson did fine. He’s come away from it having won a double [Bundesliga and DfB Pokal].“It’s worked out for him. It’s kept his profile high, and I think it will work out for him in the long run.”
