An obsolete smart phone that is no longer connected to a phone network can still take photos. You can even connect to WiFi and archive the photos on a computer. Or, connect to the computer with a cable. Much easier to experiment and learn photography with digital than film. You also learn a lot ablout something when you don't have the latest tools and greatest features and have to creatively get the most out of basic equipment.
