The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged Ugandan creatives to move away from producing explicit music videos and instead focus on creating visuals that reflect the message and theme of their songs.Speaking on the matter, Mayiga noted that music videos have a greater impact and longevity when they accurately portray the emotions, story, and message expressed in the lyrics. He explained that even songs centered on love and romance can be presented decently and creatively without resorting to explicit content, which he often sees in Ugandan music videos.I believe a music video that stands the test of time portrays the message and theme of the song as expressed by the artist in the lyrics. Even if the song is about love or romance, there are many appropriate ways of expressing that.He also criticized the growing tendency among some artists to imitate foreign cultures, particularly American and Jamaican music styles, instead of embracing their own identity.“I see artists copying and trying to look like Americans. It is unfortunate. That is why when they cross borders, they are often dismissed. Copying and pasting other people’s cultures is not the way to go. You don’t have to imitate Americans or Jamaicans when creating dancehall or rap music for Ugandans.” Rapper Keko confirms romance with singer Sheebah KarungiMayiga further encouraged creatives to prioritize quality over convenience, even if it means investing more time and resources into their projects. When you realize that a video is not good enough, do it again, although I understand that it requires a lot of funding. It is better to produce something of quality and be appreciated for it than to settle for less.Katikkiro calls for decency in content creation, professionalism, innovation, and protection of cultural values.#SanyukaUnCut #SanyukaUpdates pic.twitter.com/zFWNlItd0O— Sanyuka TV (@sanyukatv) June 2, 2026The post Katikkiro Peter Mayiga urges Ugandan creatives to focus on message-driven music videos appeared first on MBU.
