Destiny 2 players are hoping and coping that they can change the franchise’s fate

Wait 5 sec.

When Destiny 2’s final major live-service update goes live next week, players everywhere are optimistic that they can send a loud message along with it. Spurred on by some cryptic posts from Bungie community manager Dylan “dmg04” Gafner, Destiny 2 gamers are rallying each other to log on for June 9’s Monument of Triumph update in the hopes that it could change the minds of the powers that be, or at the very least, show that a potential Destiny 3 is wanted. Guardians make their own fate— dmg04 (@A_dmg04) May 31, 2026 Yesterday, dmg04 posted this on Twitter/X and players began to run with it. “Guardians make their own fate” has been a rallying cry in the game, famously appearing on the HUD when it’s time for players to lock in and complete a harrowing part of a raid or other mission. The idea is that, in Destiny, the Guardians control their fate and no prophecy or overwhelming power could stop them. As an avid player for years, the motto still makes some hairs stand up on the back of my neck, so I think dmg04 knows what he’s doing by posting this: inspiring players to come back for the final update. And I think it’s working, because it’s gotten players talking all over social media about slamming the servers on June 9 and proving that Destiny 3 is something that players want. Or, at the very least, getting on the game for old time’s sake to experience a myriad of content changes and additions that players have been wanting for some time. A lot of the updates to the sandbox and content changes were likely to be spread out over future updates, but since this is the last live-service content drop, Bungie is basically blowing the doors off by releasing it all at once. There’s been circulating rumors of layoffs to come at Bungie, as both Destiny 2 and Marathon have underperformed after Sony’s massive and pricy acquisition of the studio a few years ago. If that’s the case, I don’t think any amount of players can save it. But as dmg04 followed up with, “do not go gentle into that good night,” a line from a famous Dylan Thomas villanelle that’s followed up with “rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Do not go gentle into that good night— dmg04 (@A_dmg04) May 31, 2026 Destiny? Light? Yeah, I can see why people are getting fired up about this, especially considering the only other option being full-fledged melancholy that the game is coming to an end. Even the voice actress for Eris Morn posted about it, along with several other prominent community members, with a tinge of sadness throughout. I’ll likely be reinstalling the game again next week to hop online for some nostalgic fun as well. I’m not all that optimistic that it will make a difference for the franchise’s future (or even Bungie’s), but I’m always down to shoot some aliens again.0The post Destiny 2 players are hoping and coping that they can change the franchise’s fate appeared first on Destructoid.
