Current IFAB rule regarding shirt pull: Yellow Card only if the pull: • Is blatant • Interferes with or stops a promising attack (SPA) (note: the yellow card is not shown if the referee plays advantage for the SPA or allows a quick free kick) Recent IFAB rule changes that have changed player behaviors: Red card if cover mouth while speaking to opponent in a confrontation. Corner Kick if goalkeeper holds the ball for longer than eight seconds (with the referee using a visual five-second countdown) An old rule that IFAB implemented in 1992 that have changed player behaviors: Backpass rule: prohibits a goalkeeper from using their hands to touch or catch the ball when it is deliberately kicked or thrown to them by a teammate. -------------- Players shirt pull to restrict their opponent's movement, slows down their speed, and prevents them from running, jumping for a header, or receiving the ball cleanly. Shirt pull violates the rules of the game and harms fair play. Players can be physical and jostling as long as their hand is not grabbing and pulling a shirt. Would football be better off if shirt pull is largely eliminated like the backpass? Early result from a fan survey suggest many fans think so. submitted by /u/punishGoalhanging [link] [comments]
