Roberto De Zerbi just admitted something big about Luca Williams-Barnett's full Tottenham debut

Wait 5 sec.

Roberto De Zerbi has revealed that Luca Williams-Barnett’s Premier League debut could have come sooner than it did, in Tottenham’s clash against Chelsea.Tottenham’s Luca Williams-Barnett made his Premier League debut off the bench last time out against Crystal Palace, replacing Mathys Tel in the 88th minute. In that brief spell, the 18-year-old did enough to get the Tottenham crowd off their feet with a lovely mazy run, leaving a couple of Palace defenders behind before putting a lovely cross into the box for Mohammed Kudus to tap in, but the Ghana international failed to convert.Roberto De Zerbi was impressed by Williams-Barnett’s brief cameo and described the teenager as a big, big talent. Speaking about his debut, he said: “I thought it was the right moment for him. Because it is his first game in the Premier League. But his qualities, he is a big, big talent.”Photo by James Gill – Danehouse/Getty ImagesRoberto De Zerbi considered full Tottenham debut for Luca Williams-Barnett against ChelseaBut it is not just the Tottenham boss who has been left impressed by the youngster. Spurs Web relayed that his teammates have been equally impressed, while some within the club believe Williams-Barnett could well be challenging for a first-team spot by the end of the season.Ahead of Spurs’ clash with Leeds United this weekend, De Zerbi has now revealed that the teenager’s Premier League debut could have come sooner, in Spurs’ clash against Chelsea. That is according to Jay Harris, who asked the Tottenham boss about the youngster, with De Zerbi revealing that he considered starting the 18-year-old against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Spurs boss then went on to describe Williams-Barnett as a special talent. However, he wants the youngster to learn from James Maddison, Andy Robertson and Ben Davies.Jay Harris tweeted on X: “I just asked Roberto De Zerbi about Luca Williams-Barnett’s development and he said he considered starting the 18yo against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge RDZ also said he is a “special talent” and wants him to learn from James Maddison, Andy Robertson and Ben Davies“I just asked Roberto De Zerbi about Luca Williams-Barnett's development and he said he considered starting the 18yo against Chelsea at Stamford BridgeRDZ also said he is a "special talent" and wants him to learn from James Maddison, Andy Robertson and Ben Davies— Jay Harris (@jaydmharris) November 6, 2026A Premier League start might be close for Williams-BarnettLuca Williams-Barnett was on the bench for that encounter against Chelsea but was never introduced. The Blues also went down to ten men after Cole Palmer’s sending-off, but that came rather late in the game compared with the Palace red card early in the first half.Given how highly rated the teenager is at Spurs, the expectation is that he will continue to earn more minutes as the season goes on. And with De Zerbi having already considered naming him in his starting XI, it does hint that a Premier League start might not be too far away for Williams-Barnett.Tottenham’s next four fixtures could provide the perfect chance for just that. Alternatively, De Zerbi could wait to hand Williams-Barnett a start in the FA Cup third round in January.
