How to separate emotions from our practice - advice/rant

Wait 5 sec.

I can’t stop crying and I’m constantly holding back tears at work and at clinical. Everything is just so sad all the fucking time. How do you get over it without losing ur empathy? I don’t want to be completely numb and soulless, but I don’t want to keep crying all the time. I also find myself frustrated, extremely frustrated, with some of my coworkers and classmates and how they act towards patients. It’s my second to last semester and it’s been the hardest one out of all. I’m doing an ICU/ER rotation and some of my classmates are just so indifferent to everything. The first code I witnessed was so brutal and my classmates just walked away once it was called. I don’t understand how they could do that I stayed back and helped with the post mortem care because although he wasn’t my patient I think I would have lost some respect for myself if I just walked away and let it be a learning experience to see how codes in the er work. It didn’t help that the area I was in with my nurse was right next to the room where we set him up for his family to say their goodbyes. His wife and children’s screams still ring in my ears and I cry often from it. I currently have a patient at work who’s a former nurse, who severely disabled himself from working. The past 20 years of his life just ruined because of nursing. My one coworker just complains and bitches about him because he’s a full lift and can barely move himself. She’ll and other nurses/aides will comments in front of patients. I get dismissed when i speak up about it. I don’t ever want to turn into them. I’m sorry if none of this makes sense. I don’t want to be so angry and so sad anymore, but I know it will only get harder from here. submitted by /u/Icy_Resolution1855 [link] [comments]
