I'm particularly interested in phenological seasons and weather singularities: weather patterns that tend to recur around certain times of the year, though not necessarily every year. In Germany, we have several well-known examples, such as the Ice Saints cold spell in May, the Sheep's Cold in June and the Christmas thaw. Over the years, I've developed a set of rules for Germany, comparing traditional weather lore with 20 years of historical weather data. I then wrote a program that uses these rules to detect such events in current weather forecasts. I'm wondering whether this could become a small international project. If this interests you, you can develop your own rules, either for individual events or as a complete rule set. These rules need to be developed for each region, however. My current rules only cover Germany. The program is part of my free, non-commercial hobby project, Astronomical Sun Clock. It now also supports custom regional rule sets, allowing anyone to investigate weather singularities in their own region and develop rules to detect them. I hope this idea will appeal to people who enjoy analysing weather data and developing their own rules. I think conventional weather apps could benefit from a few new ideas.
