In the first-ever matchup between Mark McKenzie and Gio Reyna, it was the American defender who came out on top.McKenzie and Reyna traded goals in Toulouse’s 3-1 Ligue 1 victory over Strasbourg on Friday, a result that move Toulouse into 10th place. McKenzie logged 90 minutes in the victory while Reyna played 70 minutes before being substituted off with an apparent thigh injury. Reyna’s injury could potentially rule him out of action for the U.S. Men’s National Team’s November CONCACAF Nations League window. Toulouse took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to Santiago Hidalgo’s finish in stoppage time. McKenzie doubled Toulouse’s lead 11 minutes into the second half, heading home Cristian Casseres’ cross into the back of the net. It marked the 27-year-old’s first goal of the season for Toulouse. Reyna would trim Strasbourg’s deficit in the 67th minute with a top-shelf finish but unfortunately saw his night cut short only three minutes later. After Strasbourg played out a goal kick, Reyna signaled to the bench before eventually limping off the field during a substitution. The 23-year-old also missed time last season for Borussia Moenchengladbach due a thigh injury and there is no timetable on whether or not Reyna will be able to take part in USMNT duty. Thomas Jorgensen would re-extend Toulouse’s lead with 14 minutes to play, giving the hosts a 3-1 advantage that they wouldn’t relinquish.McKenzie finished the match with a 95% passing rate, three duels won, and five defensive contributions. It capped off a stellar night for McKenzie, who was named to Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT roster as an injury replacement for George Campbell. Both teams will now enter the November international break before returning to Ligue 1 play during the weekend of November 20-22.
