I’m an RN in Michigan, and I’m struggling with something I’ve been seeing on social media lately. For some background, Michigan just elected Abdul El-Sayed, who will become the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate. Since the election, I’ve noticed several nurses I’ve worked with over the years posting and sharing some pretty hateful things about Muslims on Facebook. And I’m not talking about simply disagreeing with someone’s politics or not liking the election results. I’m talking about posts that seem to express genuine hatred toward an entire religious group. Some of these nurses have been posting this type of stuff for a while, but it seems to have gotten significantly worse around the election. One person in particular has shared hundreds of posts and videos, many of them targeting Muslims. What really bothers me is that these are people who are responsible for taking care of patients from all different backgrounds. I work in emergency nursing, and we’re expected to provide the same level of care to everyone, regardless of their religion, race, or political beliefs. Some of the things I’ve seen are bad enough that I genuinely question whether these nurses could put their personal prejudices aside when caring for a Muslim patient. I realize that what someone posts online doesn’t necessarily reflect how they practice nursing, but at what point does openly expressing this level of hatred become a professional concern? I’ve been considering reporting some of these individuals to the Michigan Board of Nursing, but I’m conflicted. I don’t want to jeopardize someone’s career simply because they have political or religious opinions I disagree with. At the same time, I feel like there’s a difference between having an opinion and publicly expressing hatred toward an entire group of people you’re potentially responsible for caring for. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Is this something the Board of Nursing would even investigate if there’s no documented incident of discrimination involving a patient? submitted by /u/bigcat7575 [link] [comments]
