Health insurers are required to publish the rates they’ve negotiated with hospitals (Transparency in Coverage rule), but the files are enormous and practically unreadable for a normal person. So I scraped thousands of those price points across Alabama and put them on a map. For an MRI, I found prices at 78 facilities across Alabama, ranging from $192 to $7,425. The cheapest is UAB Medicine St. Vincent’s in Trussville at $192. Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham is listed at $7,425 for the same scan. So far the map covers common procedures (MRI, colonoscopy, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, etc.). For anything that isn’t on the map, there’s a chat on the page that can pull pricing for other procedures.
