Potentially going from mostly adult ER to exclusively peds ER - advice/input/perspectives?

Wait 5 sec.

Considering making a change from 90% adults to 100% peds. Reasons for switching are varied, but largely because this is an urban lvl 1 trauma center (work I've done before, albeit with mostly adults) and I really miss this environment. I also hate my current hospital (lvl 3 trauma, suburbia, largely geriatric population) due to overflows into the hallway treating critically ill people without monitoring or space to work + rotating patients from hallway to triage and back. I do like peds, but I have limited experience, and I haven't dealt with parents much. In the cases I have worked with them, parents are largely pretty thankful for help and oddly easy to deal with. I also do not have experience with very sick kids, moreso urgent care level cases (aside from a few status asthmaticus and a couple major traumas.) and I'm pretty terrified of truly sick kids. If I'm being honest, peds isn't what is really drawing me to this position, it's moreso disatisfaction with my current hospital and missing working in an urban trauma center. Working peds is something that is just different, which I'm not necessarily opposed to, but I don't have a burning desire to do necessarily. I'm also a single male without children and I'm not sure if this will get any judgement thrown my way, I have no idea how male nurses are viewed in this environment. Kind of disorganized thoughts but any input on how it goes in peds ERs would be great. submitted by /u/bassicallybob [link] [comments]
