There was a time, not so long ago, when the idea of a new Ghostbusters movie was a pipe dream. For years, fans hoped and prayed that Bill Murray would finally agree to return as Peter Venkman alongside his co-stars, Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), and the late Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler).Credit: Sony PicturesRelated: All 9 ‘Ghostbusters’ Installments Ranked, Including ‘Frozen Empire’Then Sony Pictures’ all-female Ghostbusters reboot came along, leaving many fans wishing they hadn’t bothered. The 2016 film, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, abandoned the original films’ timeline, opting for a clean slate while introducing a new cast that included Melissa McCarthy (Abby Yates), Kristen Wiig (Erin Gilbert), Leslie Jones (Patty Tolan), and Kate McKinnon (Jillian Holtzmann). But while the film received overwhelmingly negative reviews and underperformed at the box office, Sony refused to keep the Ecto-Containment Unit closed on future installments.Credit: Sony PicturesNew Ghostbusters Movie Reportedly in the WorksA decade later, and we’ve already had two more films set in the original timeline: Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), which starred a new ensemble that included Paul Rudd (Gary Grooberson) and Mckenna Grace (Phoebe Spengler) alongside several returning legacy actors from Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989).And now, yet another film is reportedly in development, as insider Daniel Richtman reports (via Dark Horizons) that Sony is working on a project with the somewhat bizarre title Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street, which feels like a play on both the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street and the slasher horror A Nightmare on Elm Street.Credit: Sony PicturesAccording to the report, the film is being written by Josh Miller, with credits including Sonic the Hedgehog and Violent Night. While Sony has not confirmed a new live-action film, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation’s Ghostbusters: Night Shift was announced at Annecy International Animation Film Festival earlier this year, and is scheduled to debut on the streamer sometime in 2027.Night Shift is said to bridge the gap between Ghostbusters II and the newer sequels, Afterlife and Frozen Empire. The official logline from Netflix reads:“New York City, 1994. Five years after the Ghostbusters took the Statue of Liberty for a walk, a new wave of supernatural terror hits the Big Apple, forcing a group of scrappy, young New Yorkers—untrained, underappreciated, and kinda sorta responsible for the problem—to put on proton packs, face their fears, and bust some ghosts.”Night Shift will mark the franchise’s third animated series, following The Real Ghostbusters (1986–1991) and Extreme Ghostbusters (1997); however, those were made using 2D animation.Would you like to see another Ghostbusters movie?
