I built a free survival app that runs a real AI model completely offline — and finally got it working in airplane mode

Wait 5 sec.

I’ve been working on something called AEGIS Wildlands, an offline-first survival and emergency preparedness app. The idea started pretty simply: What if the internet disappeared tomorrow? Could I still have access to survival knowledge, practical tools, and an AI assistant without depending on a server? So I started building it. AEGIS currently includes: -An offline survival field guide and reference library -An experimental AI chat interface powered by a locally installed Qwen model -Emergency references and planning tools -Food and water inventory estimates -Mission planning and checklists -Installable web-app support for desktop and mobile The biggest milestone happened recently when I installed the AI model on my older Surface Pro, switched it into airplane mode, and successfully ran local inference tests. No cloud AI involved. It’s still experimental. The model is small, the chat interface is new, and I absolutely don’t consider the AI a replacement for verified emergency guidance. But seeing an actual language model run offline on hardware I already own was a huge moment. AEGIS is free to try: AEGIS SURVIVAL GUIDE GitHub: AEGIS GITHUB I’d genuinely appreciate feedback, especially from people interested in offline AI, survival preparedness, PWAs, or running local models on older hardware. What would you add? And if you test the offline AI, I’d love to hear what device you’re using and how it performs. submitted by /u/Mammoth_Term_3872 [link] [comments]
