Dark Universe is about to get a lot bigger, and fresh aerial photography is offering the first real look at how Universal plans to make it happen. At the same time, the land’s signature attraction is preparing for a short break before the holidays.Credit: UniversalMonsters Unchained Taking Five Days OffUniversal has confirmed on its official website that Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment will be closed from December 11 through December 15, 2026. No reason has been given for the closure. The ride has anchored Dark Universe since Epic Universe opened at Universal Orlando Resort in May 2025, taking guests deep into Frankenstein Manor as Dr. Victoria Frankenstein tries to harness the power of Universal’s most famous monsters. Guests visiting during that window will still find plenty to do in the land. The village of Darkmoor is also home to Curse of the Werewolf, a family-friendly spinning coaster, along with the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, Das Stakehaus, and the Burning Blade Tavern.Credit: UniversalConstruction Progress Seen From AboveUniversal recently confirmed that a new indoor coaster is heading to Dark Universe, placed directly alongside Monsters Unchained. Theming, ride system, and an opening date have not been announced, but Universal’s official X account noted that “Construction is underway, with an opening planned in the years ahead.”Aerial photos shared on November 6 by Bioreconstruct, an account known for tracking theme park construction in Central Florida, show that work is well past the planning stage. One set of images captures construction in Dark Universe tied to access for the new coaster. According to Bioreconstruct, sand from nearby excavations has been temporarily staged on the site, while a trailer area developed before Epic Universe opened appears set to remain an expansion pad.2 aerial photos of construction in Dark Universe for access of an indoor roller coaster. Bioreconstruct reports that concrete has recently been poured for the foundations of an exterior wall, with preparation also underway nearby for an attraction foundation and a separate area for the ride beginning to take shape. Heavy machinery and freshly cleared ground are visible across the site, sitting just beyond the gothic rooftops of Frankenstein Manor. These observations are unofficial, and Universal has not commented on the layout or scale of the project.Aerial photo of construction at the far end of the show building for an indoor roller coaster in Dark Universe.Concrete recently cast for foundations of an exterior wall. Comcast reported that Universal’s theme parks generated $2.6 billion in the third quarter of 2026, a 4.4% decline year over year. CFO Jason Armstrong said demand softened through the summer, while Co-CEO Mike Cavanagh acknowledged that competitors, including Disney, “were quicker to anticipate and recognize softness in demand” and adjusted. Cavanagh also cited “capacity challenges” at Epic Universe, a pressure that a second major coaster in one of the park’s most popular lands should help address.Credit: Sarah Larson, Inside the MagicFyre Drill Closures Also ScheduledElsewhere in the park, Fyre Drill in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk will close November 9 through November 10, 2026, with a longer closure planned from January 25 through February 4, 2027. Checking Universal’s official closures page before visiting remains the best way to avoid surprises. What would you like to see from the new Dark Universe coaster?
