Arsenal 1-0 Hull City: Ødegaard Strikes As Gunners Go Six Points Clear

Wait 5 sec.

Arsenal were made to work incredibly hard for their three points at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon, with Martin Ødegaard’s 72nd-minute winner finally breaking down a stubborn Hull City side.It certainly wasn’t a vintage Arsenal performance, but another victory and another clean sheet see Mikel Arteta’s Gunners extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points, ahead of Manchester City’s later fixture.Hull Frustrate Arsenal As VAR Takes Centre StageArsenal started brightly, with Gabriel coming agonisingly close to getting on the end of an Ezri Konsa shot inside the opening six minutes, but Hull were certainly not there simply to make up the numbers.David Raya was forced into a good save from Elliot Stroud, while Christos Tzolis looked lively for Arsenal, although a promising break ended with Kai Havertz caught offside.Declan Rice saw a volley go narrowly wide before having a dangerous free kick saved, while Tzolis also threatened with a header. The biggest talking point of the first half came when Havertz appeared to be pulled down inside the penalty area by Nobel Mendy.Following an on-field VAR review, however, the referee ruled Havertz offside and no penalty was awarded, with the Emirates crowd making their frustration very clear!Arsenal went into half-time goalless, with Hull having done an excellent job of frustrating the champions.(Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images)Ødegaard Finally Makes The BreakthroughThe second half followed a similar pattern, with Arsenal pushing forward but struggling to find that elusive opening goal.Madueke was particularly dangerous, forcing saves from Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, while Arteta introduced Viktor Gyökeres and Mikel Merino for Havertz and Rice in the 63rd minute.Eberechi Eze and Piero Hincapié followed shortly afterwards as Arsenal searched for a breakthrough. Finally, in the 72nd minute, the pressure paid off.Madueke cut inside and fired a low effort towards goal. Tzolakis could only parry the ball into the path of Ødegaard, who reacted quickest to put Arsenal ahead.Relief around the Emirates!Arsenal continued looking for a second, with Merino and Gyökeres both testing the Hull goalkeeper, but the visitors refused to surrender and pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages. There was even another penalty appeal in stoppage time when Madueke went down inside the area, but nothing was given. It wasn’t pretty, and Hull certainly made life difficult for Arsenal, although their physical approach frequently crossed the line. Five yellow cards for the visitors, compared to none for Arsenal, tell their own story, with Tzolis on the receiving end of some particularly nasty challenges.Nevertheless, the Gunners kept their composure and once again demonstrated their ability to grind out a result.Three more points, another clean sheet and a six-point lead at the top of the table. We’ll certainly take that! Was this simply a difficult afternoon against a well-organised Hull side, or should Arsenal be creating more chances against teams like this?
