Attacking efficiency key for Hull’s visit

Wait 5 sec.

Morning. Arsenal are in Premier League action this afternoon, taking on Hull City at home. No doubt there will be some rotation from the midweek Champions League game, with players like Martin Odegaard, Bruno Guimaraes, Myles-Lewis-Skelly, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, Christos Tzolis and Kai Havertz all potential inclusions. I suspect Declan Rice will start! I wrote yesterday about Viktor Gyokeres and whether his good performance in midweek would see him keep his place. On the Swedish international, Mikel Arteta said: I think everybody was so happy to see, not only the goals but also the performance, how free he looked, how happy he looked, the energy that he could transmit on that football pitch. That’s exactly what we need, that’s what we’re signing, that’s the type of player that can help us to make the difference and he certainly did that during the night. So let’s see if that means he keeps his place up front. Noni Madueke has had a decent couple of weeks too, with the manager revealing he’d used the elongated Interlull in October to up the ante in terms of his own training: What he did is he went abroad and he trained. He got somebody to train him and he went into a programme, he wanted to do that. That’s Noni and that’s his mindset – he wants to get better. I love that action that he took because at that moment he wasn’t playing. With Bukayo Saka injured and Max Dowman suspended until after the Newcastle game, he’s more or less the only option on the right-hand side, so fingers crossed he can continue that form today against a team who are likely to try and make life difficult for us. Players who can beat a man and find some space are really valuable for fixtures like this, and he might prove very important later on. Hull started the season brightly, but haven’t won since the end of August. All the same, five draws from their last seven games tells you they’re a relatively tough nut to crack, and with a back five they’ll surely have looked at how other teams have come to our place to frustrate us. An early goal is always useful, Ezri Konsa’s quick strike against Everton probably prevented that game from being as much of a slog as it might have been, but we might also need some patience today too. Arteta says: Some of the difficult games they’ve come through and competed in, they’ve earned the right to be here and been impressive. We’ve been discussing that with the boys on what to expect from them tomorrow and to be clear on what we need to do to beat them. Arsenal were a bit wasteful in midweek against Slavia Prague, and so making the most of our chances will be important today. Whether it’s Gyokeres or Havertz, and regardless of the construction of the midfield, we need to be more clinical as a team in general, so let’s hope we can produce that today. I take nothing for granted in this league, but hopefully this is one we can just deal with as efficiently as possible before we head into the Interlull. — The 22 I just want to mention the launch of The 22 we had at Big Red last night, a huge thanks to everyone who came along and bought a book. The reaction to it was fantastic, and it was real pleasure to meet so many of you. A massive thanks too to Martin and Louise and all the staff there who were such a great help – with the Tollington closed for a while, Big Red is open today if you’re looking for your pre-game pints. The last batch of books will go on general sale today at 6pm (UK time) via this link (which will be live at that time): https://www.yumastudios.com/store/p/the-22 Orders are limited to two per person, and once they sell out, that’s it. This is a real collector’s item, and the best of luck if you’re after one. Andrew Mangan and James Clifford Kent – The 22 — Right, I’ll leave it there for this morning. As ever, we’ll bring you live blog coverage of the game later, as well all the post-game stuff on Arseblog News like the match report, player ratings, manager reaction, quotes round-up and more. There’s also a preview podcast on Patreon if you need something to listen to ahead of kick off. Don’t forget the updated Arseblog apps also have a cool new matchday centre, full of stats, alerts, and much more. Hopefully catch some of you a bit later on!
