[Hiring] AL & VA residents: $15 per public records request + bonuses, minimal effort (true crime YouTube channel)

Wait 5 sec.

I'm hiring for Judge Williams, a true crime channel that covers real criminal cases using official public records like body cam and interrogation footage. Alabama and Virginia only allow state residents to make public records requests, so we're looking for a few reliable locals to act as our in-state requesters. These are standard, legal requests that journalists and researchers make all the time. Is this normal? Yes. In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Virginia’s rule limiting public records requests to state residents (McBurney v. Young), and Alabama has a similar rule. Since then, journalism and transparency organizations have relied on local residents to file requests on their behalf. MuckRock, one of the best-known public records platforms, has recruited in-state “proxy requesters” in both Alabama and Virginia for over a decade, and even Virginia’s own FOIA Council has acknowledged that out-of-state requesters can simply have a Virginia resident make the request for them. Pay: $15 per request, plus a bonus whenever a request successfully gets us footage. We file a lot of requests each month, so it can turn into steady recurring income. What you'd actually do: Very little. Our records team writes the requests, sends them, and handles all the agency follow-ups. You'll have full visibility of every request made on your behalf. Occasionally an agency might mail records to your address, in which case you'd pass them on to us. Requirements: Alabama or Virginia resident, 18+, reliable. No FOIA experience needed. Interested?
