Many group decisions I’ve been part of go the same way. Someone asks “where should we eat / what should we play / which weekend works?”, a few loud people answer, and everyone else says “I’m fine with whatever.” Some of those people really do have a strong opinion. They just don’t want to be the one who shoots down someone else’s idea in public. So I built SilentVeto. Everyone ranks the options, and each person also gets one veto they can use without anyone knowing it was theirs. How it works The creator signs in with an email magic link (no passwords) and creates a decision with 2–10 options and a deadline. They share a link or QR code. Voters need no account. Each voter ranks every option and can use one veto, either soft (“strong dislike, rather not”) or hard (“hard pass, absolutely not”). Option order is shuffled per device so nothing wins by being listed first. When the deadline passes, the result is revealed. It shows the winner, the rule that decided it, and the aggregate veto counts. How the winner is picked Eliminate options with the most hard vetoes, so any option with zero hard vetoes beats any that has some. Among the survivors, keep the ones with the fewest soft vetoes. Break remaining ties with a Borda count over the ranked ballots. A vetoed option earns no points from that voter’s ballot. If it’s still tied, a random tiebreak runs and the seed is stored so it’s auditable. A result is only published if at least 3 people voted, so a “secret” veto can’t be traced in a tiny group. Privacy Ballots store no IP, no user agent and no account. Timestamps are rounded to the hour. Voters can edit their ballot on the same device using a local token. The server only keeps a hash of it. Finished decisions and their ballots are hard-deleted after 90 days. Individual ballots are never shown to anyone, including the creator and me.
