Naxxar Construction Site Fined Repeatedly Following 110 Inspections

The Building and Construction Agency (BCA) issued seven fines and contraventions in relation to the Naxxar multi-storey construction site, where foundations gave way on Thursday, raising fears of a potential collapse.BCA also confirmed that nearby buildings are safe and that evacuated residents may return home.The agency said it had also issued 71 written instructions concerning works at the large site on Triq il-Milizzja, corner with Triq is-Seneskalk, following public reports and its own inspections. It did not specify the timeframe over which the fines were issued. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)“Following the findings provided by Dr Adrian Mifsud, Geotechnical Engineer engaged as an independent expert by the Authority, the BCA confirmed that the buildings situated outside the construction site are safe,” BCA wrote on Facebook.It went on to say that “an inspection was also carried out on the site where construction work is taking place, together with Professor Alex Torpiano, an expert engaged by the developer. Consequently, the families who had been evacuated as a precautionary measure may return to their homes.”The authority said 13 families had been evacuated as a precaution. However, it added that one apartment within the site, which is being used as a residence, remains unsafe to re-enter.Earlier on Friday, residents at the site requested a written declaration confirming the safety of the apartment block, as well as further assurances, including a follow-up assessment in two months’ time.The independent architect engaged by the BCA agreed to provide a written declaration in the coming days.The BCA said the investigation into the site is ongoing.•
