It’s clearly very important to Kash Patel, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, that people believe he does not drink excessively. Unfortunately for Patel, a brutal TV reel is now going viral across nearly every social media platform, featuring Patel himself repeatedly discussing his apparent fondness for spending his free time with a bottle. The clip first originated from The Briefing with Jen Psaki on MS Now, where Patel explained that he spends his Sunday evenings drinking and that even Donald Trump knows not to contact him during that time. In another clip, Patel instead claims Friday is actually his designated drinking day — taking credit for turning “Flannel Fridays” into an online trend because that was supposedly the day he drank while wearing flannel shirts. The stories continue throughout the compilation. In one clip, Patel even appears to anticipate that his drinking habits would eventually become a topic during a Senate hearing. Inevitably, that prediction ended up coming true. However, when questioned under oath, Patel strongly denied drinking in excess. The controversy matters because recent reports suggest Patel may be wearing down Trump’s patience. After an unusually stable start to his second term — especially compared to the constant turnover of the first — Trump has gradually begun dismissing several high-profile members of his administration. Patel’s repeated boasts about drinking have now escalated to the point where some critics are openly questioning whether he is fit to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Some senators have reportedly even challenged him to undergo an alcohol test. Patel also drew criticism after declining to directly answer Chris Van Hollen when asked whether he understood that lying to Congress is a crime. When I asked Kash Patel basic questions about public reports on his conduct & weaponization of the FBI, he lashed out, & spewed provable lies. He even refused to say if he knows that it’s a crime to lie to Congress. He’s completely unfit to lead the FBI. pic.twitter.com/qeKIsFMNJd— Chris Van Hollen (@VanHollenForMD) May 13, 2026 On the Instagram posts where the viral compilation now circulates, many comments described the clips as about as close to an indirect confession as possible. One user wrote, “A person who drinks moderately does not talk like a 17-year-old frat boy.” Another added, “If he’d just admit he has a problem, everyone would support him to get help. The more he doth protest…” View this post on Instagram Ultimately, it’s true — alcoholism and other forms of addiction are issues that warrant help and empathy. But this administration has often been adamant that empathy itself is a flaw of humanity. Figures like Elon Musk repeatedly described empathy as a “bug” of Western civilization while supporting cuts to multiple federal programs and jobs. So now that it is their turn to ask for understanding and accommodation over apparent personal struggles, the only way they can appeal to the public is through statements that many people believe sound dishonest. Multiple unnamed insiders also reportedly told The Atlantic that Patel’s alleged drinking habits have sometimes made him difficult to reach behind closed doors during office hours. The report further claimed Patel lives with constant concern that Trump could fire him at any moment. Among all the clips in the viral reel, perhaps the most damaging was one where Patel recalled an exchange involving Devin Nunes. Patel said, “I went to Devin, and I told him that in the morning, he goes, ‘Dude, if you’re gonna start drinking at 9 a.m., get out of my office.’”
