Access to support services is a crucial factor for victims of domestic violence. In recent months, a second Domestic Violence Hub has been established in Mtarfa, extending services to the northern region of Malta. The hub officially opened on 29th January 2026.Staffed around the clock by police officers and risk assessors, the hub provides immediate support, guidance and protection through a coordinated and sensitive approach.Victims are always treated with respect and dignity, with a trauma-informed approach adopted to prioritise their safety, comfort and emotional wellbeing. When a victim of domestic violence arrives at the hub, the police first carry out a triage process to determine the nature of the report. If the victim chooses to proceed with filing a report, risk assessors become involved and offer a risk assessment service. If the victim accepts, the report is taken by the police while the risk assessors remain present to minimise re-victimisation, allowing the victim to recount the incident only once. After the report is concluded, the victim and the risk assessors move to a dedicated victim-sensitive room where a more comprehensive assessment is conducted to determine the level of risk the victim may be facing. The hub also includes a child-friendly indoor play area, ensuring that children accompanying victims remain safe and supported throughout the process. This hub complements the existing facility in Santa Luċija, which primarily serves the southern region, ensuring that individuals in the north can access support more easily and quickly. Another Domestic Violence Hub is also available in Gozo, located in Victoria (Rabat), further strengthening accessibility across the islands.Since its opening, the Mtarfa hub has already supported a significant number of individuals, with 132 risk assessments carried out between 29th January and 30th April 2026. These figures highlight both the demand for accessible services and the importance of continued outreach and awareness. What do you make of this?•
