Momentum has called for urgent reform in Malta’s construction sector following the structural instability reported at a major development site in Naxxar. In a statement, the party expressed concern after foundations and compacted earth at the site reportedly shifted, leading to fears of a possible collapse and prompting authorities to issue a stop-work order.Momentum described the incident as “yet another alarming reminder” of what it called a culture of excessive development, weak enforcement and inadequate safeguards within Malta’s construction industry. The party said public safety should always take priority over speculative development and warned that residents should not have to fear excavation works taking place next to their homes.Momentum is calling for a full independent investigation into the incident, publication of inspection reports and stronger accountability for developers, contractors, architects and authorities responsible for oversight. The party also proposed mandatory geological and structural assessments before permits are issued for large-scale excavation projects.Momentum leader Arnold Cassola said incidents like this are no longer isolated cases but part of a wider pattern tied to Malta’s “overdevelopment model”.Meanwhile, ADPD deputy chair Carmel Cacopardo also weighed in on the incident, arguing that Malta does not need developments of this scale and criticising planning policies which he said fail to properly assess cumulative impacts. Both parties said the latest incident should serve as a wake-up call for long-overdue planning and construction reform.Should large developments face tougher safety regulations?•
