Beloved Los Angeles restaurant owner facing deportation after ex-employee ‘ratted him out’

It’s becoming an increasingly common trend for people to call United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement on each other to settle personal gripes. The latest case of that came when a former employee reportedly called federal agents on the owner of South Los Angeles restaurant La Granja Rotisserie, Chef Carlos Lool. Lool also owns another restaurant in the same area called Fuego Rotisserie and has grown into a beloved member of the community. Unsurprisingly, much like during last year’s calamity in Minnesota, members of the community have since taken to social media to defend one of their own. Lool’s business partner and girlfriend, Jenna Lawrence, has been the most vocal. Lawrence told the press that she was with Lool when he was arrested by masked federal agents in what she described as a “sad and humiliating” encounter. According to MSN, Lawrence said, “They yanked him out of the car. They had him on the floor. They yanked me back and pulled out their guns and then they took him.” She continued, “This is heartbreaking. Every single person who’s had a family member or someone that they love taken from them by ICE — it is so sad and humiliating.” Lawrence revealed that ICE allegedly began investigating Lool after a former employee contacted authorities and claimed he had an unregistered firearm on the premises. Lool reportedly has a criminal record, and possessing a firearm at the restaurant would allegedly violate the terms of his parole. According to Lawrence, the reason Lool kept the firearm was because the neighborhood is unsafe and the restaurant has repeatedly experienced crime. Lawrence insisted the gun was only meant for self-defense. Still, Lool was detained by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is now awaiting deportation proceedings. Lawrence was not entirely clear about what led to the fallout between Lool and his former employee. But if recent trends on TikTok are anything to go by, it might not take much. One creator on the app reportedly started a fake immigration enforcement hotline where he urged people to call if they felt someone in their vicinity should be deported. People allegedly called in with complaints ranging from someone taking up too many parking spots to an Islamic neighbor who frequently hosted friends over for prayer gatherings. @palmertrolls See my unlisted ICE call compilation at benpalmer.com NYC show announced: The Bellhouse on Aug 22 Chicago July 18 Nashville July 15 ♬ original sound – Ben Palmer Lool is originally from Guatemala and reportedly received his criminal record in 1997 from a Class A misdemeanor while living in Connecticut. The chef was reportedly convicted of third-degree assault. A year later, he found himself in further legal trouble after being convicted of second-degree assault. Lool was also later arrested on multiple DUI offenses and for failure to appear in court. There is still no clarification on whether Lool was legally residing in the United States at the time of his latest alleged offense. That will ultimately play a major role in determining whether he is eventually deported. Because looking at his criminal record alone, authorities may believe they already have enough justification to paint Lool in a way that supports removing him from the country. In a final plea, Lawrence said, “He’s been in this country. His kids are here. It’s just a lot and it’s very overwhelming… and he doesn’t have his clothes, no cell phone, no computer — and we own businesses. We’re just getting deeper and deeper in a hole because he’s being deported.”
